Teen Self-Defense, Life Skills, Wilderness Adventure and Self-Discovery
The journey through the teen years can be arduous, with bodies that are constantly changing and brains that work differently. This, combined with the external pressures from society, friends, and family that pull young people to be a certain way that may be different from who they feel they are, can be overwhelming. These ‘pulls,’ along with internal issues and traumas, can cause many teens to protect themselves with destructive behaviors such as eating disorders, self-harm, and addiction epidemics that are common in our culture. Even the most successful teens, the ones that achieve and perform and earn the admiration of their peers and teachers, can lose sight of their true nature and suffer internal pressures that lead to unhealthy behaviors.
The common denominators of unhealthy behaviors are fear, worthlessness, and the lack of skills to resolve them, such as:
Being a father of seven children, I am aware of these issues, and have developed this three month course to share with teens and parents the physical, emotional and social tools to move through these issues from their True Nature, and not from the fear-based parts of themselves.
Over the fourteen weeks of training we will focus on Four Core Trainings. Each training offers teens a unique personal and group experience, enabling a deeper and more meaningful understanding and knowledge of themselves, others, and nature. These classes will not be taught separately but in a safe fun environment, and each activity will be intertwined with the others to provide practical applications that will help them in every aspect of their lives.
Students enrolled in this class will also be able to attend Saturday classes (10:30 am - Noon).
Four Core Training
Here are some of the skills, principles and learnings we will share:
Kung Fu San Soo Training
The ability to handle oneself in dangerous or bullying situations is a powerful skill that allows teens the freedom to be themselves. We will teach them how to defend themselves in a way that promotes respect, compassion, self-worth and empowerment, but not at the expense of others. Assertiveness, de-escalation and true expression are all part of personal safety and these skills easily translate into becoming an effective communicator.
There is no greater feeling than to be able to access one’s confidence and courage.
Practical, useful, fun life skills and wisdom are gifts that every teen desires. In this “life skill” portion we will focus on sharing principles and anecdotes that will help teens navigate through some of the difficult, social/ interpersonal issues in their life. Utilizing our “story time,” Master Salvage will share information on how to deal with rejection, facing fears, organizing one’s life, and ways to be free of the need to seek the approval of others. We will also have periodic separate lectures that parents can attend to help them stay connected and avoid the parenting mistakes that keeps parents disconnected and children potentially unsafe.
The correlation between nature, silence, respect, real power, martial arts, one’s true nature, and connecting to something greater than ourselves are the experiences that we will explore and develop through our periodic nature walks and workouts.
We all need to build a trusting relationship with our authentic self/ spiritual self/ true nature. During these classes Master Salvage will share with each teen how to create a safe and trusting portal to their true nature, allowing them to move, respond and react with love rather than fear. Here are some of the topics and principles we will be studying:
· Connecting, hearing trusting and following one’s intuition
· Equally accepting one’s greatness and challenges
· Letting go of agreements and judgments that work against us
· Awareness of one’s divine gifts and natural abilities
· Finding one’s own stillness through practice
· Alacrity instead of procrastination
· What it means and how to be present in the moment
At the conclusion of the three month course, each student will have experienced and touched what it is like to feel the calming power of self-defense, as well as what it is like to have the ability to express, assert, and share their thoughts for safety and communication. They will receive practical knowledge and healing through all four Core Trainings that will help them to lead healthier, happier, more loving and successful lives.
